Listed below are just some of the opportunities for our volunteers. Most opportunities are available Monday through Friday. Adult volunteers are asked to commit to 100 hours a year, at a minimum of 4 hours a day, once a week. To learn more details and view the service description, click on the titles.
The hospital's needs vary from one day to the next. Volunteers may be assigned to an office setting, patient floor or special project; it depends on the need.
A partnership program with Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. Interested individuals must be 55 years and older, complete program requirements through University Health and Catholic Charities. Volunteers assist nursing staff with caring for babies in the NICU and newborn nursery units. This position requires a special individual to provide extra love and comfort to our smallest patients.
Patient floors include general medicine, physical therapy, newborn nursery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and more.
Assist in the playroom, visits with patients and conduct clerical tasks assigned by nursing staff and child life specialists.
The role of this volunteer is to offer comfort and consolation to patients and their families.
Volunteers interested in donating their time in a specialize or virtual space can range from working on a special project, coordinate neighborhood magazine drives quilting or sewing projects. We would love for you to share your talent.
Provide assistance with way-finding and answering questions at the information desk. This person must possess exceptional people skills and because you will be one of the first people customers will encounter, you must be willing to present yourself as "the face" of University Health.
Paws Up Pet Therapy Program
The Paws Up Pet Therapy is a University Health program designed to bring compassionate comfort to young patients and their families during a stay at University Hospital. A visit from our furry friends and their handlers bring smiles and a good feeling as soon as the patients see their new friend. The Paws Up Pet Therapy program offers an opportunity to interact safely with dogs and cats. The program is also designed to bring comfort, smiles and good feelings to all University Health visitors and staff.
Our Pet Teams currently certified with a recognized National or Local therapy organization approved by University Health such as: Pet Partners, Therapy Animals of San Antonio, PAWS for Service (Pets Are Wonderful Support).
To be considered for this rewarding program, you and your dog/cat must be registered with Pet Partners, Therapy Animals of San Antonio or PAWS for Service (Pets Are Wonderful Support). You and the dog/cat must successfully complete an evaluation by our Paws Up Pet Therapy committee and must successfully complete the adult volunteer requirements.
