Lung Valve Procedure
University Health System is the first in South Texas to offer an endobronchial valve or lung valve treatment for emphysema patients that doesn’t involve surgery. This treatment option is particularly effective for patients who experience symptoms despite taking COPD medications and/or oxygen.
For many, this life-changing treatment gives immediate relief without having to undergo lung volume reduction surgery or a lung transplant.
Our team of pulmonary specialists offer this bronchoscopy procedure as a cutting-edge treatment to emphysema patients who in the past have had limited options for improving their breathing problems. After treatment, most patients are able to take full breaths and quickly get back to everyday activities. In clinical studies, patients treated with Zephyr® Valves have been shown to:
- Breathe easier
- Be more active and energetic
- Be less short of breath
- Experience a major improvement in their quality of life
Zephyr® valves are intended to be permanent, but are removable if necessary.
University Health is the largest cystic fibrosis (CF) center in the area and one of only two CF centers in South Texas accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
