Emergency Department Designed for FamiliesYou might need family members or loved ones with you when you have an emergency. We know it makes you more comfortable and relaxed. Our emergency department was designed with that in mind. We have conveniently located waiting areas so you can have your support team with you as much as you like.
One of the Best ERs in the U.S.University Health's emergency department is among the best in the United States. We provide a full spectrum of care and treat more than 70,000 patients each year.
Level I Trauma Center
The emergency department is part of a Level I trauma center, which is the highest designation from the American College of Surgeons. This means we’re a comprehensive regional resource that is central to the trauma system. We serve a 22-county region in South Texas. We’re capable of providing total care for every aspect of injury, with 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons and prompt availability of care in many specialties.
Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
We are the only Level I pediatric trauma center in San Antonio and South Texas. We have 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons and other pediatric specialists. We also have a separate pediatric emergency center dedicated to providing complete care to children from minor to complex injuries and illnesses.
We are the only hospital in San Antonio with a 24-hour emergency department dedicated to the special needs of women for obstetrics emergency services and gynecology emergency services.
Cardiac Life Support
Our emergency department is staffed by board-certified and specialized emergency medicine doctors, advanced practice providers and nurses certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
Improving Patient Experience
We are one of only 10 U.S. trauma centers – and the only one in Texas – to participate in the Urgent Matters program focused on improving the flow of patients in increasingly crowded hospital emergency rooms.
