Diabetes Self-Management Education

Learn diabetes self-care and management from certified diabetes educators at University Health’s Texas Diabetes Institute. The education program is nationally recognized and accredited by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Boost Your Diabetes Care Skills

Partner with us to make living with diabetes easier. Balancing healthy eating, regular exercise and blood sugar levels can sometimes be challenging. Spend time with a diabetes educator to:

  • Build better behaviors, such as healthful eating and regular exercise
  • Decrease the onset or progression of diabetes complications
  • Improve self-confidence
  • Enhance your quality of life

Diabetes Self-Management Education Class

Gain the knowledge, skills and abilities you need to care for your diabetes successfully in our diabetes self-management class. We’ll consider your needs, goals and life experiences while following the ADA’s proven care standards for diabetes. Classes are available in English and Spanish.

The goal of education is for you to learn:

  • Informed decision-making about your health
  • Self-care behaviors that maintain and improve your quality of life
  • Problem-solving and collaboration with your health care team to manage your diabetes

Educators & Class Topics

Live well with diabetes by learning to incorporate diabetes self-management strategies taught in our diabetes classes. Session to Live well with diabetes is offered in three sessions with follow up at three and six months. You’ll receive tools, information and support to guide you through your journey to take control of your diabetes.Registered nurses and dietitians at University Health lead classes.

Individual Diabetes Classes

Healthy Cooking Classes

Cook healthy, delicious food after attending our Healthy Cooking Class at the Texas Diabetes Institute teaching kitchen. A registered dietitian teaches you how to cook meals that taste great and are good for you. Each class features a classic recipe with a healthier take on it.
