Behavioral Health Outpatient Services in San Antonio

In addition to hospital-based treatments for acute mental health conditions, we offer comprehensive outpatient behavioral health services for adults whose primary care provider is at University Health.

Outpatient care means that you do not have to stay in the hospital for treatment. Instead, you will meet with your doctor for regular appointments. At University Health, we provide comprehensive evaluations to find the source of your condition.

Are you concerned about your or a loved one's substance abuse? Take our online substance abuse assessment.

Mental and Physical Health Evaluation

We will start with a psychiatric evaluation. During a psychiatric evaluation, your doctor may ask:

  • About your behavior and what triggers you
  • About your symptoms
  • How your mental condition affects work, school and relationships
  • For your complete health history

An evaluation may also include lab tests, such as:

  • Blood tests
  • Brain imaging
  • Educational assessments
  • Speech and language assessments

We also can help you manage the right medications that work for you, and make adjustments as you need them.

We offer individual therapy and family intervention as well, and can help connect you with additional resources in the community.

Treating a Behavioral Health Condition

Depending on the nature of your condition, your doctor may recommend behavior therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy or a combination of methods.

  • Behavior therapy involves changing the way you physically behave in order to treat a mental disorder.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy involves making an effort to change the way you think in order to manage your behavioral condition.
  • Medication to manage your symptoms, especially when there is a chemical imbalance in your brain causing the condition.

We understand that treating your mental health condition can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Your team of specialists is there to help you each step of the way. Please don’t hesitate to call us when you have questions about your treatment plan.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
We also offer outpatient child and adolescent psychiatry for patients and their families.
