We specialize in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment [link to treatment page] of epilepsy in children. Through the South Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (STCEC), a partnership between University Health System and UT Health San Antonio, we treat children with complex seizure disorders.
Our program is designated as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center – the highest accreditation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Our pediatric epileptologists (doctors who specialize in epilepsy) use cutting-edge technology and diagnostics [link to testing & diagnostics page] to determine the cause of seizures in both children and adults.
We conduct comprehensive testing and monitoring to pinpoint the origin and extent of the seizures. Our patients have access to a state-of-the-art, pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at University Hospital where brain activity data is collected during a three-to-five day stay.
Our clinical team, made up of board-certified neurosurgeons, epileptologists, highly-trained EEG technicians, physician assistants and other epilepsy specialists is dedicated to helping epileptic children by providing the most effective treatments possible.
Medication works well for many children with epilepsy to prevent or minimize seizures. However, some children have complex neurological conditions that don’t respond well to medication. When needed, epilepsy surgery can prove to be an effective treatment. We perform resective brain surgery, hemispherectomies, corpus callosotomies, vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) implantations and other medical procedures to reduce or prevent abnormal brain activity.
Each child is provided with a unique treatment plan, educational support for managing their condition [link to conditions page] and additional outpatient follow-up services.
Highlights of the South Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center:
With our innovative approaches to treatment, many pediatric patients are able to receive minimally invasive surgery instead of having a craniotomy.
For convenience, our patients have access to tests and treatments at several locations [link to our facilities page] in San Antonio. In collaboration with the Epilepsy Foundation of Central and South Texas, we also provide outpatient support services in Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Harlingen and Laredo.
