(SAN ANTONIO, TX – March 22, 2016) Diabetes Alert Day is a national event, but with soaring diabetes rates in San Antonio and South Texas, it’s particularly meaningful here.
The Texas Diabetes Institute is observing Diabetes Alert Day by offering the community a health fair that includes free glucose screenings, information on community events and services, and two special features: the dedication of TDI’s new garden, courtesy of San Antonio Food Bank, and cooking demonstrations led by a Food Bank chef and dietitians with TDI.
Through a partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank, the Texas Diabetes Institute’s community garden was restored and rebuilt to produce foods for cooking demonstrations — and for members of the community to harvest as they need it.
“In the fight against diabetes, we provide the best treatments for our patients and we continuously work toward developing even better treatments through research,” said Theresa de la Haya, senior vice president of community health and service line programs at University Health System.
“But when people can manage or even prevent the disease through better life habits, everyone wins,” Ms. de la Haya said. “Healthy eating is vital to this effort. We are so proud to be able to offer more options in the fight against diabetes, and grateful to the Food Bank for making it possible.”
The health fair also features free glucose screenings and information about events and programs including Tour de Cure, Senior Services, CareLink, State of Texas Kidney Foundation, and others.
