Getting your flu shot is easier than ever

By Scott Williams

Getting an annual flu shot is a good idea for almost everyone, but COVID-19 has made protecting yourself from the flu even more urgently important. Influenza and COVID-19 are both serious illnesses, and they share a number of common symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Chills
  • Body aches

Getting your flu shot reduces your own risk of catching the flu and can reduce the overall risk of flu illness in the community by 40%-60% in a given season, according to the CDC. Reducing your risk also helps prevent the spread of the flu, keeping others healthy. It is possible to catch COVID-19 and the flu at the same time, so we should do anything we can to reduce our risk of getting sick.

We may not yet have a COVID-19 vaccine, but we do have safe and effective flu vaccines. We've also built good habits this year: hand-washing, maintaining physical distance from others and wearing your mask help protect you and others from the flu in addition to COVID-19.

This year, University Health has partnered with Community First Health Plans and Bexar County Precincts 1, 3 and 4 to host drive-thru flu vaccination events so you can protect yourself from the flu without ever leaving the comfort and safety of your car. Watch the video above to learn how drive-thru flu drives work, then make an appointment online for one of our upcoming events around San Antonio.
