Keep your blood sugar in range during the holidays

By Sarah Garcia, BSN, RN, CDCES

As someone living with diabetes, I start to worry about the homemade comfort meals that come with the holiday season. Is it possible to enjoy myself and keep my blood sugar in range? ¡SI SE PUEDE!

Holiday Tips to Stay On Track

I would like to offer a few holiday tips to avoid the post-holiday worry of, “What will my doctor say?”

First, don’t be so hard on yourself. Yes, you can have tamales, Mexican hot chocolate, pan dulce and menudo. Pero con cuidado, carefully. Portion….not all at once!

Don’t skip a meal to “save up” for that holiday party later. Eat your regularly portioned meals at regular times to keep your blood sugar at range. As I tell my boys, eat in moderation when faced with temptations. Pick one food you just have to have – don’t deny yourself. Then, fill your plate with healthy vegetables and lean protein.

More tips to remember this holiday season

  • Take small portions of the foods that tempt you.
  • Eat a small, balanced meal at home so you are not tempted to overdo it.
  • If you are invited to a celebration, offer to take a veggie tray or a low-carb dessert.
  • Plan what you are going to eat before you serve yourself.
  • Choose raw, grilled or steamed veggies instead of those with cream and gravy.
  • Limit starchy foods. Fill your plate with veggies and lean protein first.
  • Drink water or a low-carb or sugar-free beverage to enjoy. Avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • Check your blood sugar regularly.

Remember, Everything in Moderation

And what if you overindulge? Don’t be hard on yourself. Instead:

  • Go for a nice walk with the family.
  • Play a game outside if you can with the grandkids, nieces and nephews.
  • Get moving at least 30 minutes per day.
  • Register for a free group class at TDI

Most importantly, tomorrow is a new day and a new opportunity to get back on track.
