Growing to meet the needs of South Texas

University Health System Blocks

Planning Has Begun for a New Women’s & Children’s Hospital at University Hospital

The Women’s & Children’s Hospital at University Hospital will provide much-needed facilities to meet the needs of our growing community and region.

Expected to open in early 2023, funded with no tax rate increase, includes:

  • a new 12-story, 300-bed hospital for women, babies and children
  • new 900-space parking structure
  • additional shell space for future growth

A place for compassionate, quality care

This will be a place where women, children and their families are surrounded with all of the experts and technologies to provide the highest level of compassionate care. It will be the only hospital in South Texas exclusively focused on the unique needs of women and children. And it will be a hospital like no other, where patients will see and feel the difference of care provided by a team who understands that being attentive, kind and helpful without exception is really good medicine because:

  • care is provided in ways that foster collaboration and communication
  • patients and families feel respected
  • a caring community is built on empathy, support and compassion

The New Hospital Will Deliver Excellence for Moms and Babies

As an academic medical center, in partnership with UT Health San Antonio, University Hospital is South Texas’ only Level IV maternity center. That means this team is uniquely prepared for high-risk deliveries and complications that can occur with any pregnancy. The new hospital will feature special amenities for moms and babies including:

  • a dedicated OB/GYN Emergency Department and operating suites
  • large, private labor and delivery suites
  • the highest level NICU connected to our Labor & Delivery Unit
  • spacious, private inpatient rooms
  • plenty of space for a family member to stay in the room overnight
  • a mom’s sleeping suite for mothers who return to the NICU to breastfeed babies

We have big plans for our tiniest patients

When a baby is born too soon or with a serious congenital condition, our Level IV Neonatology team is here to provide the care needed. The new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will include:

  • single-family rooms arranged in pods to optimize quality, comfort and efficiency
  • space for family member to stay overnight and a warm welcoming environment to promote healing and bonding
  • advanced treatments and diagnostic tools

And special services for children who need to stay in the hospital

Our Children’s Health specialists provide the comprehensive care for sick and injured children. The new hospital will feature:
