Important to the center's success are the collaborative
efforts underway with other specialties, including
geriatrics, physical medicine, rehabilitation,
general surgery and colorectal surgery. A dedicated,
multi-disciplinary team dedicated to the care
of those afflicted with pelvic floor disorders
is certainly a valuable resource to the South
Texas region and facilitates research and education.
The urology division at UTHSCSA was recently selected by the National Institute of Health as one of nine sites across the country to participate in the Urinary Incontinence Treatment Network -- an all-encompassing study addressing all aspects of urinary incontinence. The first part currently underway compares the two most common surgeries for urinary incontinence, the Burch and the Sling procedures.
The study specifically targets women with stress urinary incontinence -- the accidental loss of urine that occurs with exercise, sneezing, coughing or other activities that place pressure on the abdomen and bladder. Study participants must be at least 21 years of age, suffered from the problem for at least three months and have no neurological diseases.
Individuals interested in participating in the study can call (210) 567-0548 for additional information.
