The University Health System Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of directors representing the community, University Health System and the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. The board takes an active role in all fundraising endeavors including special events and campaigns.

Board of Directors Biographies

James Adams

James AdamsJames Adams has been serving on the Bexar County Hospital District's Board of Managers since 1998. He was nominated by Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. He is chairman of the board and serves on the Budget & Finance Committee.

Adams received a bachelor's degree in math and physics from Texas A&M University, and a master's degree in statistics and business finance from the University of Texas at Austin. He is retired from Texas Instruments, where he served as chairman of the board. He previously had retired from SBC Communications as Group President for International Operations and from Southwestern Bell Telephone as President/CEO.

Adams currently sits on the board of directors of Texas Instruments. He also serves on the Engineering Advisory Board at the University of Texas and the School of Science Advisory Board at Texas A&M. He is the co-founder the Dallas Partnership, the economic arm of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce and chaired Governor Rick Perry's blue ribbon commission on Higher Education in the 21st century. Adams serves on a number of local community boards, including several focusing on education for Latino youth, as well as the advisory boards of Accion Texas and Alpha Home. He is president of the Harlandale Education Foundation.

Adams is a deacon and member of the Board of Trustees at Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio.

Jeanne BennettJeanne Bennett -  UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Jeanne Bennett is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. Her banking experience spans over 27 years with the past 19 years at Compass Bank. As a senior relationship manager, her focus is primarily on medical account relationships. Her primary role is to assist in the establishment and maintenance of depository and loan accounts along with identifying other areas where she can add value to the customer. Providing prompt service and product expertise is key to ongoing relationships.

Alexander Briseño is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. He is also a board member of the Bexar County Hospital District's Board of Managers where he serves on the Budget & Finance Committee. Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff nominated Briseño to the Board of Managers in September 2001. Briseño retired as City Manager of San Antonio in March of 2001, after serving almost 11 years in office. Briseño is active in the community, having served on the boards of directors for the Boy Scouts of America (Alamo Area Council), Free Trade Alliance of San Antonio, and the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. Briseño is also a member of Trinity University's Board of Visitors, the Board of Directors of the Masters Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County, and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. John CalhoonDr. John  Calhoon - UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Dr. John Calhoon has been a University Health System Foundation board member since 1993. He attended the University of Texas at Austin on a scholarship to play golf, later graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in 1981 and came to his residency in San Antonio in general surgery in that year. He joined the faculty at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1989 and became Professor and Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery in 1996. His honors include listings in Best Doctors in America, Who's Who, and a variety of teaching awards from the institution and department including being awarded the President's Council Chair for Excellence in Surgery in 2003. Dr. Calhoon is the immediate past Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, is President- Elect of the Thoracic Surgery Director's Association, and is a Director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, Texas Surgical Society, and Southern Surgical Society. He is active in a number of civic areas and has served as Chairman of the local American Heart Association Affiliate Board, President of the local Surgical Society, and Chairman of the Board of the Dominion Country Club.

Blas Catalani, IIBlas Catalani, II - UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Blas Catalani has been a University Health System Foundation board member since 1999. He is active in several civic and community organizations in San Antonio. He is the current Chairman of Methodist Hospital Community Board, board member of Methodist Health Care Ministries and a Director of their Board of Governors. He is also a Director of the Texas Burn Survivors Society.

He earned his Bachelor�s Degree in Business from St. Mary�s University in 1972.

Blas has worked for Southwest Securities Private Client Group since 2006. He is the vice-president of the San Antonio branch, providing securities brokerage, investment banking and securities clearing services. Prior to joining Southwest Securities, Blas held various management roles with Prudential Securities, UBS Financial Services and Merrill Lynch.

He has been married to his wife, Georganne, for 31 years and has two sons. In his spare time he enjoys bird hunting and playing golf with his sons.

T. Pat DuncanPatrick Duncan
Patrick Duncan is one of our newest Board members. He is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of USAA Real Estate Company, the commercial real estate investment and management arm of USAA. Prior to joining USAA in November 1986, Pat was with Trammell Crow Company for a number of years in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Duncan received his degree from the University of Arizona. He is a Certified Public Accountant, CCIM and holds a Texas Real Estate Broker's License. His community involvement includes serving on the Board of the Texas Research and Technology Foundation and The Founders Council for the UTSA College of Business, Real Estate Finance and Development Program. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, including being a past chairman of the Chamber. He has held prior Board memberships in the Daughters of Charity Services of San Antonio.

Linda ElliottLinda Elliott
Linda Elliott joined our Board in August of this year. In 1999, she opened her own business, Elliott Connections, which specializes in connecting people and companies together. As a woman business owner, she is a dedicated member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), where she is the current Chair of Programs. She has served in multiple leadership capacities, including past President, in the San Antonio Chapter.

Ms. Elliott just completed 12 years as a director of the North San Antonio Chamber board, where she was very instrumental in the development of new programs. Her previous Board memberships include Arts San Antonio, American Diabetes Association and San Antonio Youth Literacy Advisory Board.

Frank GarzaFrank Garza -  UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Frank Garza is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. He is a shareholder of Davidson & Troilo, P.C. and Chair of the firm's Practice Management Committee. He is Head of the Public Law, Utility and Environmental Section. He was educated at Trinity University (BA, 1983) and Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C. (JD 1986). He is a member of the International Municipal Lawyers Association, and has taught over ten Continuing Legal Education Courses in the areas of municipal law as well as employment law. Mr. Garza is an adjunct professor of Graduate studies classes at St. Mary's University entitled, "Ethics and Public Officials" and "Basics of Municipal Law". In October of 1995, Mr. Garza joined the City Attorney's Office in San Antonio, Texas as First Assistant City Attorney. From April of 1997 to January 2002, Mr. Garza was named City Attorney to the City of San Antonio. He prepared and administered the budget for the Legal Department, directly supervised six Division Chiefs in the management of the office, and was lead attorney on the city's most recent redistricting plan.

Yvonne Gonzales -  UHS Foundation Board Member photoYvonne Gonzales
Yvonne Gonzales brings a wealth of knowledge in non profits, fundraising and special event planning. She is a currently a member of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research and the Southwest Foundation Forum, an organization of women who serve as ambassadors and fundraisers.

She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Social Science from the University of Texas at San Antonio majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Legal Studies. Having worked with the District Attorney's office for 5 years, Yvonne saw firsthand the care that many of their clients received at University Hospital.

In her spare time, Yvonne volunteers at St. George Episcopal School as a library volunteer and Girl Scout Co-Leader; at Holy Spirit Catholic Church as a Catechism teacher; and as a fundraiser for Los Ninos de la Calle, a school in Nuevo Progresso, Mexico. She and her husband, Don, are raising two young daughters.

Randy Harig has been a University Health System Foundation board member since 2002. Mr. Harig has 30 years experience in the medical device industry presently serving as President and CEO of Ortho-Tex, Inc. Ortho-Tex is a marketing and distribution firm serving North America and the Republic of Mexico with primary product interests in orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation specialties.

Mr. Harig is very active in civic and church affairs and is a former member and chairman of Centro 21 (a San Antonio City Council appointed task force directed to promote downtown growth). Mr. Harig devoted much time to the successful effort to pass the San Antonio Library bond issue that established the complete upgrade of library facilities and services. Mr. Harig has been a board member of the Research Park foundation since 1985 and has held numerous positions within this board. Mr. Harig has been a Fiesta Commissioner from 2001 - 2009 and the Day Minister for Rey Feo (Fiesta) 2004. Most recently, Mr. Harig was Prime Minister for Rey Feo 59, Mr. Brian Weiner. He is also a member of the Consejo Organization.

William L. Henrich. M.D. MACPWilliam L.  Henrich. M.D. MACP - UHS Foundation Board Member photo
William L. Henrich. M.D. MACP is a member of the University Health System's Board of Directors. He is also the President of the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Henrich received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and his doctor of medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Oregon Medical School and a fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Henrich held many positions at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, including Professor of Internal Medicine, including as Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at the VA Medical Center in Dallas and Attending Physician at Zale Lipshy University Hospital. From 1995 to 1999, he served as Professor and Chairman of Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio and Chief of the Medical Service, Medical College Hospital, in Toledo, Ohio. Subsequently, he served as the Theodore Woodward Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at The University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore from 1999-2006.

George B. Hernández, Jr. is the Secretary/Treasurer of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. He is also the President and Chief Executive Officer of University Health System. Among his numerous professional and service affiliations, Hernández serves as vice chair for the Daughters of Charity Services of San Antonio, board member for the United Way of San Antonio & Bexar County, member of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas, member of the Board of Trustees for the Texas Hospital Association, member of the Governor's Texas Health Care System Integrity Partnership, and as local government representative for the Texas Health & Human Services Commission Task Force for Local Health Care Initiatives.

Larry KurthLarry Kurth -  UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Larry Kurth is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. He graduated from the College of Wooster, in Wooster, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Planning in 1976. He attended St. Mary's University School of Law, where he served as Articles Editor on the St. Mary's Law Journal. He graduated with aJ.D. in 1981. After spending a year as a Briefing Attorney for Judge Tom Davis of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Mr. Kurth joined the Houston office of Fulbright & Jaworski. He transferred to the San Antonio office in 1986, and became a partner in 1990. In November 1990, he became a shareholder in Jones, Kurth, Andrews & Ortiz. In 2005, he joined Clark, Thomas & Winters as a shareholder and in 2011, he joined Beirne, Maynard & Parsons, L.L.P as a partner. He is a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators, NFPA, and the Association of Texas Arson Counsel.

J. Rick Lewis
J. Rick Lewis presently serves as Chairman of the University Health System Foundation and considers his involvement with this board as among this most rewarding community service experiences. Currently, his is a Senior Lecturer and recent Coordinator of Construction Science & Management Bachelors Degree Program at UT/San Antonio- College of Architecture.

During his eight years at UTSA, Mr. Lewis has taught across the breath of the College's curriculum. In addition, he has served in an array of administrative posts while at UTSA contributing to the Architecture Program's rapid growth and development since initial accreditation by the National Architectural Accreditation Board. Rick Lewis is a registered architect with experience in a wide range of design endeavors with particular expertise in historic architectural preservation and adaptive use projects. He holds a Bachelor Degree in architecture from Texas Tech University and a Masters of Architecture from The University of Texas at Austin.

Tom Mayes, M.D., M.B.A.Tom Mayes,  M.D., M.B.A. - UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Tom Mayes, M.D., M.B.A. is a member of the University Health System's Foundation board of directors. Dr. Mayes currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and also as Physician-in-Chief of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children's Hospital. A member of the UTHSCSA Faculty since 1994, he has served in a number of key leadership positions within the University and School of Medicine including Interim Dean of the Medical School, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, President/CEO of University Physicians Group, and as Medical Director of the Pediatric ICU's at University Hospital and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children's Hospital.

A native of El Paso, Texas, Tom received his B.S. in Biology from Baylor University, his M.D. from Georgetown University, and his M.B.A. from the University of Texas in San Antonio. Prior to joining the Health Science Center, Tom served as an active duty Air Force physician at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. He has served on the Board of Directors of several non-profit organizations including the Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas and the Board of Governors of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center. He was an inaugural class member of the Master's Leadership Program of San Antonio and Bexar County.

Terrell McCombsTerrell  McCombs - UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Terrell McCombs presently serves as Chairman of the University Health System Foundation. He has worked for McCombs Enterprises since 1988, handling a variety of sales and finance management positions. He is currently a senior vice-president, overseeing all purchasing and procurement contracts for the company. Terrell graduated with honors from the University of Houston in 1978, where he attended on an athletic scholarship in track and field. He earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from The George Washington University in 1984.

Terrell has served as Chairman of the Board of the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the 2003 & 2007 Joint City-County Bond Oversight Commissions, Co-Chair of the 2007 City Street Bond Project Selection Committee, and serves on the Executive Committee of the San Antonio Sports Foundation. Terrell has also served as a past president of Lead SA, an organization supporting business leadership in San Antonio. He is the former Chair of several local United Way agencies and has served as Chairman of the Bexar County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited as well.

Pamela M. Otto, M.D. is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. Dr. Otto currently serves as Associate Professor/Director of Imaging and Intervention at The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and has been the Associate Professor/Medical Director of Radiology at Texas Department of Infectious Diseases and Director of Radiology at University Health System since 2001. She graduated from the University of Missouri in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and in 1988 with her Medical Degree. Dr. Otto currently serves on the Board of Directors for Magdelana House, Southern Medical Association Services and the San Antonio Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

David Palmer is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. He currently serves as Senior Manager of Talent & Organizational Performance Systems at Valero. He has worked at Valero since 1991 and has held numerous I/S positions. Mr. Palmer is no stranger to serving the community having mentored students at Douglass Elementary and Poe Middle School as well as serving as Team Captain for the American Heart Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In addition, he is a Trinity University Computer Advisory board member.

Dr. T. John Parsi, DDS, MBADr. T. John Parsi, DDS, MBA
Dr. T. John Parsi, DDS, MBA, is a member of the University Health System Foundation's Board of Directors. Dr. Parsi graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a bachelor degree in Biology. He attended the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston where he received his doctoral degree in dentistry. While in dental school he received multiple scholarships and awards for his research in oral cancer and implantology from the UTDB-Houston and MD Anderson Cancer Research. Upon graduation, he began his practice in San Antonio as a family practitioner and continued his dental education by taking many hours on new methodology in dentistry. He is certified by the Clinical Foundation of Orthopedic and Orthodontic Society, Mid-American Orthodontic Society and Sport dentistry. Currently, he is involved in a preceptorship in dental implantology and esthetic dentistry and recently received his master's degree in Business and Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Parsi is a member of San Antonio Dental Society and a past member of the board and speaker's bureau.

Steven J. Pritchard is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. He is presently the Principal of Steven J. Pritchard & Associates, a financial, real estate and management consulting firm. Mr. Pritchard is a former bank and holding company president and CEO with 35 years experience in banking, finance, business administration and accounting. Mr. Pritchard is active in the community having served as Chairman for the Auction Sales Committee of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Father Flanagan's Boys Town Board and the University of Texas Century Club (San Antonio Chapter). Since 2001, he has served as President/Trustee for Alamo Heights Independent School District. He also is a member of the Alamo Heights Chamber of Commerce, North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the West Side Chamber of Commerce.

Nicholas Walsh, M.D.Nicholas  Walsh, M.D. - UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Nicholas Walsh, M.D. is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors and currently serves as the President of the Medical-Dental Staff of University Health System, which he also held from 1991 - 1996. Since 1989, he has been the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. From 1992 - 1996, he served as Medical Director of University Health System, and from 1998 - 2001 served as the President/CEO of University Physicians Group. Dr. Walsh is currently the Associate Chief of Staff for Rehabilitation and Acting Chief Medical Officer for the new Polytrauma Center at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System.

Karla Wentworth Karla  Wentworth  - UHS Foundation Board Member photo
Karla Wentworth is a member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. Born in Iowa, Karla came to Texas and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design from Trinity University in San Antonio. She is an active community leader, serving on the boards of directors of the San Antonio Public Library Foundation and the Hidalgo Foundation of Bexar County. She previously served as president of Bexar County Republic Women. She has been a dedicated volunteer for the South Central Chapter of the March of Dimes for many years and has served as Chairman of the Texas Foundation for March of Dimes. In 1992 and 1993, the Wentworths were named Family of the Year by the South Central Chapter of the March of Dimes.

Ruben Zamora is President & CEO of OpTech Healthcare Solutions and a current member of University Health System's Foundation Board of Directors. He retired in 2007 after 29 years with Bristol-Myers Squibb in field sales and numerous home office and field management positions. Even with a 2nd career underway, Mr. Zamora finds time to "give back" to a community that he loves. He is a member of St. Mark's the Evangelist Knights of Columbus, Mobile Fishes and Loaves Outreach, Alumni Board Member of UT-Pan American, Altrusa International San Antonio mentor, and a San Antonio Sports Foundation volunteer.

Irwin D. Zucker is a member of University Health System Foundation's Board of Directors. He is the President and Managing Partner of Davidson & Troilo, P.C. Zucker, is a member of the San Antonio Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas and the State Bar of Nevada. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio where he teaches various tax courses in the graduate program. Additionally, he has been recognized as one of San Antonio's Best Lawyers in San Antonio by SA Scene magazine in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
