Pediatric Trauma and Burn Clinic: 210-358-0500

Trauma kills more children than all other causes combined. Deaths for children 18 and under number more than 12,000 each year in the U.S., according to the National Trauma Institute.

At University Hospital’s Janey Briscoe Children’s Center (9th floor, D elevators), we provide expert care for seriously injured children and a full-service burn program for children.

University Hospital is the only verified pediatric trauma center for San Antonio and South Texas, providing the highest level of care for young patients injured across 22 counties. The trauma team at University Hospital is recognized for its expertise in treating seriously injured and burned children by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

The ACS Committee on Trauma verified University Hospital as a pediatric trauma center in October 2012, after a lengthy application process and site visit.  University Hospital treats almost 1,000 children suffering from serious injuries and burns each year.  University Hospital was officially verified by ACS as a Level II pediatric trauma center and plans to advance to Level I status at a future date. The requirements related to patient care for Level I and Level II are the same.  Level I verification includes specific criteria related to pediatric trauma research.

If your child is seriously injured and taken to University Hospital, he, or she, will be immediately evaluated by our waiting trauma team. Lab work, X-ray and CT scans will be done, and a trauma surgeon will inform you of your child’s injuries and plan for care. Your child may need immediate emergency surgery or may receive other treatment or care in the hospital.

Our Pediatric Trauma Team includes:

  • Child Life Specialists
  • Pediatric Critical Care Nurses & Staff
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons
  • Pediatric Otolaryngology
  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Plastics and Reconstructive Surgeons
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Trauma Surgeons
  • Urology And, Pediatric Specialists in: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Neonatology, Nephrology

After surgery, your child will be moved to our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the Janey Briscoe Children’s Center on the ninth floor, which provides critically-ill and injured children a low nurse-to-patient ratio and a staff of faculty pediatricians with extensive experience handling even the most complex cases.
