Trauma Services at University Hospital

University Hospital is home to the lead Level I Trauma Center for a 22-county region of South/Central Texas, an area that is geographically larger than 17 states in the U.S. It is the only trauma center in South Texas that can care for seriously injured and burned children. Unlike community hospitals, Level I trauma centers offers life-saving care for the critically injured 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our trauma team is immediately available because trauma happens at all times of the day and night.

If you think trauma won’t impact your life, you should know that injury is the leading cause of death for all people ages one to 44. According to the American Trauma Society, a trauma occurs every four seconds in the U.S.

In partnership with UT Medicine San Antonio, our trauma doctors lead a team of experts including fellows, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and registered nurses.

We offer a system of care through a dedicated trauma team focused only on trauma emergency. Our center is equipped with a CAT Scan Suite, on-site laboratory and X-ray to provide fast and thorough review of injuries. Rapid treatment by an experienced trauma team can mean the difference between life and death.

Think of us as an umbrella of protection where surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and technicians are ready at the time of emergency and later for specialized care, treatment, rehabilitation, nutrition, and follow-up care.
