Thoracic Surgery

John Calhoon, MD
Professor of Surgery
The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

Dr. John Calhoon serves as the Head of Thoracic Surgery at The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and received his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He trained in General and Thoracic Surgery in San Antonio and was chief resident in Pediatric Heart Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is the Program Director for the Thoracic Surgery Residency at The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Areas of expertise include congenital heart surgery for all ages; transplantation of the heart and lungs and adult cardiac surgery.

Edward Y. Sako, MD, PhD
Professor of Surgery
The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

Dr. Sako received his medical degree at the University of Minnesota, where he completed a surgical internship and residency. His thoracic surgery residency was completed at the University of Michigan. His interests are in heart and lung transplantation, valvar heart disease and surgical education.

Dr. Scott Johnson, MD
Assistant Professor of Surgery
The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

Dr. Johnson is the Surgical Director of the lung transplant program at University Hospital. He is the Head of General Thoracic Surgery at The UT Health Science Center. He received his medical degree from the University of New Mexico. He performs adult heart and lung transplantation and other cardiothoracic surgeries.

Andrea J. Carpenter, MD, PhD
Clinical Associate Professor
The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio

Dr. Carpenter is the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The UT Health Science Center. She earned her Ph.D. in Physiology from Penn State University in 1981 and her medical degree from George Washington University in 1989. She is board certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. She was Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center until she accepted a position at The UT Health Science Center in 2002. Predominantly an adult cardiac surgeon, her interests include minimally invasive valve repairs, homograft root reconstruction, the Ross procedure and advances in technology for the future of thoracic surgery. Dr. Carpenter also specializes in lung transplantation.
