Texas Diabetes Institute is clearly focused on the eyesight of its patients. Comprehensive ophthalmologic care to patients with diabetes includes routine follow-up and education.

Led by Dr. Wichard van Heuven, a world renowned retina specialist, The Ophthalmology Clinic combines two divisions under one roof; the Diabetic Eye Clinic and the Residents' Clinic.

The Diabetic Eye Clinic is unique in that is provides comprehensive eye care to diabetic patients. The Diabetic Eye Clinic has six providers, including three optometrists, one comprehensive ophthalmologist and two retina specialists.

The Residents’ Clinic offers general ophthalmology care, provided by ophthalmology residents and supervised by members of the Ophthalmology Department faculty, to all eligible patients.

In this clinic, state-of-the-art equipment is used for the testing and treatment of the disease. We have recently added visual photography to our clinic to view the most important part of the eye prone to diabetes, the retina. Tests such as fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography, using special color lights and dyes, allow the doctors to view parts of the eye previously not accessible by standard photographic techniques. Doctors view these photographs digitally to get the best view of areas in question. This allows you, the patient, to receive the best care in the region.
