The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Our team at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is committed to the treatment and fast recovery of critically-ill children.

Pediatricians with special training in intensive care are available at all times to immediately respond to the critical needs of pediatric ICU patients and to maintain contact with referring physicians. Additionally, pediatricians from the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio have extensive experience with even the most complex cases.

Our unit's low nurse-to-patient ratio allows for each child to be closely cared for, with nurses at the bedside. A full-time nurse practitioner manages the continuum of care and recovery for all patients.

The Pediatric Transition Unit

The Pediatric Transition Unit provides care for non-critical patients. This unit uses the latest monitoring capabilities in every patient bed and has a team experienced in the care of children with complex problems.

Board-certified pediatric hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the primary care of all patients and for consultation on patients managed by private pediatricians or surgical specialists. All Janey Briscoe physicians are pediatric staff in the division of critical care for The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Our mission is to provide the best continuity of care, individualized treatment and family-centered recovery.

Physicians referring patients to the Janey Briscoe Children's Center will receive regular patient status updates and will have an opportunity to participate in inpatient care, if desired.
