The Weeks Before

There are many things you can do to prepare for your visit to the Outpatient Surgery department.

  1. Call your doctor:
    • If you have a fever or flu-like symptoms before surgery
    • If your child is scheduled for surgery and has been exposed to a contagious disease such as chickenpox, measles, mumps, impetigo or lice up to three weeks before the surgery

  2. Do not take any aspirin or ibuprofen for at least one week before your surgery unless instructed by your surgeon. This includes:
    • Motrin
    • Advil or Nuprin
    • Naproxyn or Aleve
    • Bayer, Excedrin, etc.
    • Aspergum
    • Pepto Bismol
    • Check labels of cold preparations for inclusion of any of these substances.

  3. If you take blood thinners such as Coumadin, Heparin, or Lovenox ask your doctor about stopping these before surgery.

  4. Make sure you arrange for appropriate transportation home from surgery. You should not use public transportation (bus) immediately after surgery. An adult needs to drive you home.

  5. The surgery clinic will contact your insurance company for authorization of payment and any necessary co-payment for the procedure.

  6. If your doctor has ordered lab tests, get them done within 7 days before your surgery.

  7. Prepare for your return home after the procedure. Buy a supply of clear liquids such as sprite, apple juice, Kool-Aid, etc. to drink after surgery.
