After the Surgery

You may spend time in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit after surgery. The type of anesthesia, the nature of your surgery as well as any health issues you have will determine your length of stay. During your time in PACU, the nurses will monitor you closely. You will be encouraged to cough and deep breathe. The nursing staff will assess you for discomfort and give you medication as needed. Parents of small children will be allowed to stay with their child as soon as they awaken.

You will return to Outpatient Surgery to be cared for until discharge if your surgery requires only a short stay in the hospital. Once you are in Outpatient Surgery, you will be cared for until you meet discharge criteria. Your nurse will give you verbal and written instructions, necessary prescriptions and information about your follow-up appointment. Before you leave, remember to ask the staff to validate your parking ticket. School and employment excuses are available for you and your primary sponsor upon request.

Should you require a longer time of recovery in the hospital you will be admitted to an inpatient floor after surgery.
