Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why can't I eat or drink after midnight?

The safest way for you to have anesthesia is on an empty stomach. Eating or drinking after the restricted times given to you by the nurse will cause a delay of up to eight hours or possibly the cancellation of your surgery.
  2. How long will it take?

The total length of stay varies with each person. It depends, in part, on the type of procedure you have and the time it takes you to recover.

Your surgery or procedure includes spending some time in the surgical holding area to provide you with the opportunity to speak with your anesthesiologist. You will also have an IV started at this time. You will receive medicine in your IV to help you relax prior to going to the Operating Room. Parents of small children will be with their children in this area.
