It’s Your Hospital.
University Hospital, owned by the taxpayers of Bexar County, is the lead provider of trauma care for South Texas and the region’s only trauma hospital caring for seriously injured and burned children. It is a critically important resource that’s here for you and your loved ones 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Living Proof.
Thousands of personal stories of patients and hospital staff are living proof of the medical miracles occurring everyday at University Hospital. No one ever thinks it will happen to them or their loved ones, but people like real estate agent Jane Swanson, who survived a tragic workplace shooting and 8-year-old Irving Arteaga, who suffered an attack by vicious watchdogs at a South Texas ranch, prove that trauma can happen to anyone, anytime, anyplace. University Hospital doctors, nurses and staff are also living proof of the commitment to excellence and dedication to saving lives. As one Emergency Center nurse recently put it, “Saving lives is what I live for.”

AirLIFE. Diabetes. Transplants.
University Hospital’s “living proof” personification expands a full range of care. San Antonio AirLIFE, jointly owned by University Health System, is one of the nation’s most recognized emergency medical transport programs. University Health System’s Texas Diabetes Institute is one of the largest and most prestigious centers in the world dedicated to comprehensive diabetes care, prevention and the ongoing search for a cure. And the University Transplant Center is among the top five transplant centers in Texas, offering the most sophisticated level of medical treatment for every patient entrusted to their care.

Real Challenges. Focused Vision.
In 1968, University Hospital became one of the first hospitals to open in what is today the large and growing South Texas Medical Center. The Emergency Center was built 25 years ago to handle 35,000 patients a year. Today it sees close to 70,000 patients, annually. This severe overcrowding causes delays in care and long wait times. This important community resource is too small to meet current needs and is not prepared to handle future requirements of South Texas’ growing population or a large scale disaster. As recently reported in the San Antonio Express- News, according to the U.S. Census, San Antonio is the 3rd fastest growing city in the United States.

The University Health System Master Facility Plan offers a sound solution to the growing needs of our community. The plan includes constructing a new Trauma Tower at University Hospital and urgent care facilities at University Health System - Robert B. Green Campus. Additionally, the oldest sections of the hospital and the historic Robert B. Green building downtown will be renovated, and parking will be expanded at both locations.

The goals of this initiative are simple and critically important to every person in Bexar County and South Texas:

  • Assuring life-saving Level I trauma services remain immediately available at all times of the day and night, by having the appropriate number of operating rooms and intensive care beds at University Hospital
  • Reducing wait times in the University Hospital Emergency Center (EC) by adding more EC bays and more general medicine/surgery beds for patients admitted from the EC
  • Providing single-patient hospital rooms, with in-room showers, to improve infection control and privacy concerns
  • Offering efficient, quality care at the right location for patients in crisis or needing immediate care, but not a hospital

For Everyone.
University Hospital and the University Health System network of community clinics serve the needs of all and are committed to being there for you when you need us.
