Former University Health System President honored for diabetes leadership
Guest helped form America’s largest diabetes center
BACKGROUND: Diabetes, and its deadly complications, is the number one health problem in our community. Fortunately, there are many in San Antonio dedicated to improving the quality of life of diabetes patients and to finding a cure. And there is a place – owned by the taxpayers of Bexar County – where this tremendously important work is happening everyday. The Texas Diabetes Institute (TDI) – a program of University Health System – is the nation’s largest, and most comprehensive center, devoted entirely to battling this disease. TDI is located where it is most needed, on San Antonio’s West Side, where the incidence of diabetes is the highest in the nation.
Once a year, University Health System honors an individual who has made significant contributions to advancing TDI’s mission. That person is inducted onto the TDI Wall of Honor.
The honor this year goes to a man who made it his passion to place San Antonio at the forefront of diabetes treatment, research and education at the national level. Mr. John A. Guest, who served as University Health System President/CEO from February of 1984 to March of 2000, will be inducted onto the Wall of Honor during a special ceremony on Thursday, November 16, 2006.
Guest negotiated the purchase of the old bankrupt Lutheran General Hospital and engaged community leaders in determining how the property could best be used. Once the property was secured, his vision was to develop it into the beautiful and comprehensive University Center for Community Health campus – the home of TDI. Because of this vision and commitment, TDI is now recognized worldwide for its outstanding contributions to diabetes research and clinical advancements.
