Instead of: “Scalpel please”… it will be: “Can you hand me that wrench?”
--University Health System managers put their team-building training to the test--

About a dozen University Health System (UHS) managers will be trading in their sterile gloves for work ones, as they set out on an entirely new mission to build bicycles for needy children. The exercise is part of a specialized team-building training program to teach managers how to solve specific challenges and work as a team.

The complete bicycles will go to various local charities, including University Health System Child Life Program; Big Brothers, Big Sisters; the Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio; and St. Peter and Joseph's Children's Home.

The Build-A-Bike Team Building program and charity event involves brains and brut strength. Each group will not only help provide brand a new bike for a young child, but also participate in a unique opportunity to learn about each other in a fast-paced, free-for-all exercise. Other benefits include brainstorming, problem-solving, communicating better as a team, identifying strengths of individual team members, collaborating better as a team, and realizing that departments and individuals within a company can't act independently on their own.

This exercise is part of UHS’ Management Development Academy, a two year program designed to provide mid-level managers with the training and skills needed for career advancement. As one of the largest employers in Bexar County, UHS has a workforce of more than 5,000 individuals, working in 20 facilities located throughout the community. Developing the organization’s leaders for tomorrow from within its current employee base is one of UHS’ highest priorities.
