Former UT Longhorn football stars throw touchdown pass to save lives
-Wane McGarity & Johnny Walker join the “Blood Donation Challenge” at University Hospital
-
(SAN ANTONIO – August 10, 2009) BACKGROUND: Wane McGarity and Johnny Walker have more in common than playing college football at the University of Texas at Austin and getting signed with NFL teams; they both also understand the critical need for giving blood to save lives.
McGarity and Walker, along with Rita Verreos, Survivor Fiji contestant and Charles Seafous, R&B singer, will be at University Hospital tomorrow to help meet the challenge of collecting units from 100 blood donors in just one day. On an average day, about a dozen seriously injured people from San Antonio and all over South Texas are rushed to University Hospital following car crashes, falls or other traumatic incidents. Many of these trauma patients are in shock - after losing a lot of blood. In fact, it’s not unusual for a trauma patient to require up to 100 units of blood.
Car crash survivor Nicholas Velasquez, 9, was rushed to University Hospital in August 2007. His courage through his very long and painful recovery has inspired Longhorn players and fans. Nicholas will be at University Hospital during the blood challenge to meet the players and thank donors.
