Local child safety expert to help save lives nationally

(SAN ANTONIO - February 22, 2006) Each year hundreds of young children are killed in car crashes and thousands more are injured seriously enough to be rushed to hospital emergency rooms. Using car safety seats and seat belts correctly is the best way to prevent this from happening to your child. In Bexar County, car crashes are one of the main causes of unintentional injury death in children.

Yvonne Holguin-Duran , Community Outreach Specialist with University Health System has been appointed the National Child Passenger Safety Board. Her experience includes community outreach, program development and legislative efforts to increase child passenger safety awareness.

The National Child Passenger Safety Board was established to advise the training and certification of child passenger safety technicians. These technicians are a critical member of the child safety team. They perform car seat inspections and help parents and caregivers learn how to use their child safety seats.

In her new role, Yvonne will also work with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Safe Kids Worldwide to offer insight and experience from our community in an effort to improve these efforts across the nation.
