University Health System nurse earns first DAISY Award

-dedicated nurse will be honored for extraordinary work-

BACKGOUND: Nurses are responsible for the treatment, safety and recovery of their patients. In fact, it would be impossible for University Health System – or any hospital - to carry out its mission without highly skilled and dedicated nurses. That’s why the DAISY Foundation was formed in 2000 by the family of a man who died after a battle with cancer and rare bleeding disorder. “As we brainstormed what to do in his memory, the one really positive thing we could hold onto from the experience was the skillful and amazingly compassionate care he received from his nurses - even when he was totally sedated. So we created The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses to recognize the super-human work nurses do every day all over the country,” the family explains on their Web site. Each year, this award is presented to an outstanding nurse in more than 175 healthcare organizations across the United States. About 3,000 nurses have received the award.

University Health System will announce its first-ever DAISY Award winner on Thursday, February 12. This inaugural honoree has been chosen by nurse administrators, peers, physicians, patients and families. This nurse personifies University Health System’s mission to provide a positive patient experience and consistently demonstrates excellence through clinical expertise, service and compassionate care.
