Christmas comes about a month late for one S.A. Baby
“Children are the hope of the world.” - José Marti

As they do every year, members of the Cuban Cultural Center of San Antonio will come to University Hospital to honor a baby born on January 28, the birth date of Cuban leader José Marti. This event is part of a program called “Hope for the World.”

Before the communist takeover of Cuba, it was customary to celebrate the birthday of José Marti, Cuba’s “Father of Independence,” who was born January 28, 1853. Organizations throughout Cuba presented babies born on Jose Marti Day with a Canastilla Martiana (a complete layette).

The tradition lives on at University Hospital as the baby born January 28, and determined to be most in-need, will receive the Canastilla Martiana - including crib, play pen, car seat, bouncy seat, toys, bottles, diapers, clothing and more. All other babies born that day will each receive a small gift.

The Cultural Center also takes this time each year to express its deepest gratitude to the city of San Antonio for the warm welcome it has always given to Cubans.
