Outreach effort coincides with meeting of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST)
BACKGROUND: The Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), representing nearly 2,000 medical professionals involved in the care of the injured patient, will educate students at Thomas Jefferson High School on the dangers of distracted and impaired driving and other injury prevention topics. The campus was selected because faculty and students have been enthusiastic partners with University Health System in past injury prevention initiatives. The daylong Community Outreach Program coincides with the 29th EAST Annual Scientific Assembly in San Antonio, taking place Jan. 12-16. More than 50 trauma medical care providers who will be attending the EAST Annual Scientific Assembly, trauma nurses from throughout the region, staff from University Health System and local law enforcement officers will take part in the daylong outreach program.
EAST holds a Scientific Assembly annually in January. Since 2012, EAST — along with its partners, the Society of Trauma Nurses and the American Trauma Society — has conducted a Community Outreach Program at an area high school in the city hosting the Annual Scientific Assembly. This program has educated more than 1,500 high-school-age students. For additional details on the program and to view videos from past programs, please visit the EAST website at www.east.org/education/injury-control-violence-prevention.
