Robert B. Green Campus now offers one-stop center for pediatric specialty care
With the aim of creating a one-stop center for children with both routine and serious medical needs, beginning today, University Health System is bringing together a comprehensive array of pediatric specialty care at its Robert B. Green Campus downtown.
Almost a dozen pediatric specialties are now housed on the newly completed sixth floor of the clinical pavilion at the Robert B. Green, which opened one year ago. These services had been scattered across the city in 10 different locations and four different buildings. The new Children’s Health/ UT Kids specialty complex makes it more convenient for families, and creates an opportunity for collaboration and innovation between physicians.
San Antonio suffers from a documented shortage of pediatric sub-specialists, and the new facility brings dozens together in one location — including unique or limited services such as our cystic fibrosis program and pediatric endocrinology.
The new outpatient specialty care complex is a partnership between University Health System’s Children’s Health and UT Medicine San Antonio’s UT Kids program. UT Medicine is the pediatric specialty physician practice group of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.
Pediatric specialties include cardiology, cystic fibrosis, endocrinology, hepatology, immunology and infections disease, neurology, ophthalmology, palliative care, pulmonology, psychiatry and sleep medicine. Most of these services opened Thursday. The remaining will be added over the next few weeks.
The building’s first floor houses pediatric primary care services and PediExpress urgent care for kids, staffed by pediatricians from Community Medicine Associates, University Health System’s nonprofit physician practice group.
Altogether, the new pediatric complex is expected to see 18,000 visits a year for specialty care, and more than 50,000 general pediatric visits.
Families using Children’s Health services at the Robert B. Green also have access to imaging, lab tests, pharmacy and more — all in the same convenient location.
The sixth floor of the clinical pavilion at the Green, which opened in January of 2013, was originally designed as shell space for future growth. After construction began, the need arose quickly for a new home for UT Medicine’s pediatric specialists.
University Health System and UT Medicine signed an agreement in February 2013 to permanently add new outpatient primary care and specialty services for children downtown. The same agreement also includes a transition plan for pediatric inpatient and outpatient care at University Hospital. New pediatric rooms and other child-friendly clinical spaces recently opened in University Hospital on its fifth, ninth and 11th floors.
University Health System’s Child Life specialists will be hosting games and activities for patients on the sixth floor of the Robert B. Green today to celebrate the opening of the new space.
