George B. Hernández, Jr., University Health System President/CEO, announced the selection of Greg Gieseman as Chief Executive Officer of Community First Health Plans. Gieseman will officially join the organization on Tuesday, January 18.

Prior to University Health System, Gieseman served as Chief Executive Officer for Select Health Network in South Bend, Indiana, owned by St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. He brings a wealth of health plan and managed care experience, and a strong commitment to the mission, vision and values of University Health System. Gieseman was selected from a field of highly-qualified finalists following a national search.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at Towson University, in Towson, Maryland, and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland. After gaining business experience at the Campbell Soup Company and McCormick’s, he transitioned to healthcare as director of operations for the Health Care Compliance Association (HCAA) in Baltimore.

Over the past 17 years, Gieseman has gained valuable health plan, health delivery and benefit administration experience in for-profit and community-owned health payer and provider network organizations. He has amassed a strong track record for developing and implementing utilization management, reporting and reimbursement systems that improve both financial performance and consumer satisfaction.

“He is a good fit for our organization on many levels. His expertise will be of great value as we strive to maximize opportunities for Community First Health Plans and University Health System’s inpatient and outpatient services to collaborate and provide high-quality, affordable care to the people of Bexar County and surrounding communities,” said Hernández. “His strategic planning and business development skills will help our organization be well-positioned to adapt quickly and succeed as changes in how healthcare is delivered and funded occur at the state and federal levels.”

Gieseman replaces Charles L. Kight, who retired as Chief Executive Officer of Community First Health Plans last year.
