Pharmacy Practice Residency Program

Overview

The Department of Pharmacy at University Health System in San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy, is proud to offer three American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited post-graduate year one (PGY-1) pharmacy practice residency positions for the July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009 residency year. Candidates must have received a pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy and have a strong desire to strengthen their clinical practice, academic, and leadership skills.

University Health System (UHS), the public hospital district for Bexar County, is San Antonio's only health system recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's Best Hospitals and ranks in the Top 50 in Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, and Orthopedics. The majority of clinical rotations will occur at the flagship institution, University Hospital, a 604-bed acute care hospital which serves as a regional Level I Trauma Center and a leader in Organ Transplantation. As the primary teaching facility for The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, our medical team participates in cutting-edge medical research. A full range of medical services is available at five community clinics, including the renowned Texas Diabetes Institute.

As full-time employees of University Health System, residents receive a competitive annual stipend plus excellent employee benefits. Residents are also appointed as Clinical Instructors with The University of Texas College of Pharmacy.

Purpose and Outcomes

The purpose of the University Health System PGY-1 pharmacy residency program is to prepare graduates for a PGY-2 specialty practice residency, an adjunctive pharmacy faculty position, or employment as a clinical pharmacist within a health system.

Residents completing the UHS program will learn to manage and improve the medication-use process and provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams. They will provide medication and practice-related education and training as well as drug information to heath care professionals and patients. UHS residents will utilize medical informatics and demonstrate project management skills by conducting a pharmacy practice research project. In addition, residents will exercise leadership and practice management skills.
