Going the "Extra-Gallon" to Save Lives

University Health System employees recognized for donating their blood to others

Everyone knows that you can’t survive without blood, but most of us don’t take time to realize what an impact we could have if we each took a little time to share our good health through blood donation. Some trauma patients can use more than 100 units of donated blood, so a continual supply of donated blood products at University Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center can mean the difference between life and death.

Hundreds of University Health System employees understand that "saving lives is in their blood" so they roll-up their sleeves on a regular basis to give.

More than 300 of these staff members will be recognized at a special luncheon on Friday, January 27 for donating at least one gallon of blood and/or blood platelets. Many of the donors are being awarded triple and double awards for their generous donations. In fact, one donor is receiving his 28-gallon pin for several years of platelet donations. These generous donors are helping us save lives. They are also saving the hospital owned by the people of Bexar County nearly $600,000 per year!

WHO: University Health System and UT Health Science Center employee blood donors receive their “gallon” award pins.
