South Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center

State-of-the-art facilities and services of the South Texas Comprehensive Epilepsy Center include:

• Adult and pediatric neurologists with specialty training in epilepsy, electroencephalography (EEG), and clinical neurophysiology.
  
• Neurosurgeons with expertise in adult and pediatric epilepsy surgery.
  
• Psychiatrists with expertise in clinical neurophysiology, epilepsy-related psychiatric disorders and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.
  
• The completely digitalized Neurodiagnostic Center at University Hospital for outpatient electroencephalograms or for inpatient continuous video-EEG monitoring.
  
• A eleven-bed video-EEG monitoring unit with eight beds for adult monitoring in three beds for the evaluation of children. The service features a fully computerized digital recording system and 24-hour monitoring by highly experienced nurses and technical staff.
  
• The epilepsy monitoring unit also features the first ictal SPECT service in San Antonio. Ictal SPECT is an important imaging tool for the localization of the seizure onset zone.
  
• State-of-the-art neuroimaging facilities at UT Medicine, Research Imaging Center (UT Health Science Center at San Antonio), and University Health System with high resolution MRI and PET scanning.
  
• Patients with medically refractory epilepsy can benefit from participation in studies testing new medications before they are released on the market.
