Initial consultation and evaluation:
- 60 minutes - during this time several anthropometric measurements are taken reflecting the asymmetries and variances in the patient's skull. These measurements are utilized for fabrication of the initial orthosis and for comparison documentation during future visits.
- Insignia Digital Imaging - employs a three-dimensional laser scanner to acquire a three-dimensional digital image and corresponding anthropometric data of the infant's skull. Anthropometric data is used to document variance and asymmetries and is stored to be analyzed at future appointments.
Initial fitting of the orthosis:
- 60 minutes - this visit entails initial fitting of the orthosis, evaluation of fit, adjustments if necessary to ensure appropriate outcomes, parents/care giver are given instructions for the daily evaluation of orthosis to ensure there are no skin irritations, wearing instructions, and care of the orthosis.
Initial follow up appointments:
- An initial follow up appointment is typically scheduled 1-2 weeks post initial fitting to ensure appropriate fit and functionality of the cranial helmet.
Subsequent follow up appointments:
- Appointments are scheduled to adjust the overall fit and functionality of the orthosis. An infant's skull is very malleable allowing for rapid growth during the first year of life necessitating comprehensive supervision of the orthotic treatment to promote symmetrical growth and prevent any unwanted skin irritations and or breakdown.
- Additional visits may be necessary to address any areas of redness, swelling, or unwanted pressure. Such visits are common accommodating for the rapid growth of the infant during this stage of life.
Insurance claims processing and submission:
Some insurance companies require precertification or preauthorization before we can provide the helmet. This all depends on the benefits, coverage, deductible, and co- insurance. Preauthorization is not a guarantee of payment! Please check with your insurance to see if prosthetics is a covered item.
- Approved by insurance: Due to slow reimbursement from most insurance companies for prosthetics, it is very likely that you will need to make arrangements to pay for the helmet upon receipt. If the insurance company pays for the helmet, you will be reimbursed at a later date.
Not approved by insurance: Payment in full will be expected for each cranial helmet if preauthorization or precertification is not approved by the insurance. Once approved a claim will be filed to your insurance company as a courtesy.
If the helmet is denied as not medically necessary, not a covered benefit, or considered cosmetic to the insurance company we will not file a claim because we have already received the denial.
- The usual and customary price for each cranial helmet is $2500.00 each insurance company has their own contract price therefore the price may be less.
