In partnership with area schools, we provide innovative programs designed to increase students’ awareness of health career opportunities. We invite you to explore these pages to better understand the depth and breadth of activities we provide.

Apple Seeds for Literacy

University Health System is partnered with the Express-News for Newspapers in Education program to provide newspapers and curriculum to Memorial High School students in a Health Career track.

Clinical Rotations/Internships/Externships/Preceptorships

University Health System has formal affiliation agreements with primarily San Antonio. Schools. We provide qualified students the opportunity to enrich their educational experience through clinical rotations, internships, externships and preceptorships. Only students from schools with current affiliation agreements have access to University Health System facilities based on approval and availability of the department(s). Camp 98.6: The Next Generation of Health Professionals

Camp 98.6 is an intensive 2-week summer education program organized by University Health System, St. Philip’s College and Harlandale Independent School District. Students from Harlandale ISD, interested in pursuing medical careers, take classes and participate in a simulated trauma scenario with the AirLife and trauma teams at University Hospital.

Junior Achievement/UHS Groundhog Job Shadow Day

University Health System in collaboration with Junior Achievement hosts selected high school students for a Job Shadow Day event. Students are immersed in various UHS departments with mentors where they get firsthand information about job skills and health career choices.

Health Careers Observation Program University Health System offers health career observation opportunities in our facilities. The program requires department approval. More information can be found on the Health Career Observation Program page.

Health Careers Tours

Students have the opportunity to tour University Hospital Facilities. Submit a request for a tour here.

Volunteer Programs

We offer volunteering opportunities to adults, high school and college students. Come and explore healthcare careers, assist administrative staff with clerical duties, participate in special projects and take part in ongoing training and hospital sponsored classes. University Health System Health Ambassadors

University Health System staff share their work experience and education by conducting presentations at local school districts in San Antonio. For more information see the Guest Speakers page.

University Health System /Memorial High School Partnership

A school-to-career program with Memorial High School that broadens and advances students’ interest in healthcare professions and opportunities through mentoring, internships, and tours.
