Patients Get a Second Chance at University Hospital's Transplant Center

The number of recipients is nearly 2,000, enough to fill a small South Texas town. That's how many transplants the faculty physicians from The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA)  operating with multidisciplinary surgical teams in state-of-the-art facilities at University Hospital, (UH)  have performed over the past two decades.

The majority of those have come since 1985, says " Glenn Halff, M.D., director of the UTHSCSA/UH transplant program.  "The liver and lung and kidney transplant programs here are among the most successful in the United States. In addition, the programs are very successful in terms of our educational mission and clinical research.

The liver transplant program is now the ninth largest in the United States "More than half the liver transplants we perform are for chronic hepatitis C infection," Dr. Halff said, explaining  that one of the infection's side effects is serious liver damage. "The fact that the virus does not go away at transplant is leading us to aim some of our research at preventing hepatitis C recurrence after transplant."

For the patient, The Transplant Center offers cutting edge technology, attractive private patient rooms and a remodeled Transplant Clinic.  More important, University Hospital physicians are in the hospital round the clock and include specialists in Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology and other disciplines.

The University Hospital Transplant Center -- one of  the Top Five Transplant Centers in Texas -- is ranked first for lung transplants and second for liver transplants.
