Dear Friends,
Welcome to UniversityHealthSystem.com.
University Health System is the d/b/a for the Bexar County Hospital District, which was established by Bexar County voters in 1955.
Owned by the taxpayers of Bexar County, University Health System is a nationally recognized academic medical center and includes a network of 18 outpatient clinical locations across the community. These facilities serve as the primary teaching locations for the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. The faculty physicians of the UT Health Science Center School of Medicine are experts in their fields of specialization and work collaboratively with our highly skilled nurses and other health professionals to provide the very latest in advanced treatment options for even the most complex medical problems.
Thanks to the leadership and support of our Board of Managers and the Bexar County Commissioners Court, we have embarked on an ambitious $899.4 million Capital Improvement Program to help sustain our mission well into the coming decades. The Target 2012: Capital Improvement Program includes expanding capacity at University Hospital to support our critically important role as South Texas’ lead Level I trauma center. Additionally, a new urgent care and diagnostic treatment building will be constructed at University Health Center – Downtown to enable us to provide even more specialized care outside the hospital and closer to home for many patients. Please visit our Target 2012 webpage for more details on this exciting project.
I am also proud to tell you of our success with implementing a fully integrated electronic medical record across all of our locations. In fact, University Health System is one of the Top 25 Connected Healthcare Facilities, according to HealthImaging and IT Magazine and One of the 100 Most Wired Hospitals in the nation, according to Hospitals and Health Networks Magazine and the American Hospital Association.
Yet, even as we continue to blaze new trails with technology, and look ahead to the construction of new state-of-the-art facilities, we have not lost sight of the fact that the best medicine is definitely that which keeps people healthy. In 2008, University Health System took over operations of ten public health clinics from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. These Preventive Health Clinics provide important opportunities for improved access and continuity of care for those most in need.
As an organization we are doing much to benefit this community and trauma region, and Bexar County taxpayers should be proud of our excellent track record and good stewardship. However, above all, I am most proud of the dedicated people who bring the best of themselves to their work each day, and our patients who inspire us with their strength and hope.
Again, thank you for your interest in University Health System.
Sincerely,

George B. Hernández, Jr.
President/CEO
