Our Mission: The A Su Salud program aims to prevent cervical and colorectal cancer, along with reducing injury related deaths and disabilities to the people of South Texas through a combination of education, research, intervention programs, and public policy modification. Programs: A Su Salud Injury: The Injury Prevention program reaches the community of South Texas through news segments, community publications, and presentations. Injury is the leading cause of death in the United States, and so the program concentrates on a broad list of injury prevention topics ranging from life-threating diseases to home safety. A Su Salud Cervical Cancer: The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas awarded funds to University Health System to help prevent cervical cancer in Bexar County. University Health System is using the funds for a cervical cancer education and outreach. Elements of the program include tailored print materials, mass media and patient reminder systems. The A Su Salud Cervical Cancer Program is an innovative, culturally competent, cervical cancer education and social marketing program based on Social Cognitive Theory and the successful A Su Salud model which has showed positive results in Hispanic populations for improving cancer screening. The program includes focused messaging to patients through client reminders to enforce cancer prevention messages and provide support for action; newsletters distributed at CareLink clinics; and television segments. A Su Salud Colorectal Cancer: The A Su Salud Colorectal Cancer Health Promotion program is funded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to reduce the burden of colorectal cancer in Bexar County through social marketing activities, which are a blend of traditional mass and print media, and innovative social media outlets. The A Su Salud model, which is based on Social Cognitive Theory and Stages of Change, has been successfully utilized to promote other health behaviors in Hispanic populations, such as cervical cancer screening. Messages to be broadcast through the various media elements are tailored to the specific population. These messages are developed based on knowledge, attitudes and beliefs expressed by focus group participants, who are members of the target population. The media elements include public service announcements, broadcast through YouTube, Face book, and traditional television channels, newsletters, bill inserts, telephone or text messaging, and direct messaging through Face book and a blog. These tailored messages focus on cancer prevention messages, addressing perceived susceptibility, barriers, and social/peer/familial support, and include a call to action. Volunteers The heart of A Su Salud has always been the volunteer network. These trained and motivated individuals act as ambassadors for the program, distributing and promoting materials directly to their friends, family, and community members. Not only do the volunteers make positive changes in their own lives, but they encourage others to do so as well. |
